Only customers with a rented XB2 or XB3 device can access the Admin Tool, the wireless gateway's administration site (http://10.0.0.1), to manage their WiFi settings. Here, you can log in to your wireless gateway to customize your usernames, passwords, parental controls, and network settings including your firewall and open/closed ports.
If you have WiFi Boost Pods or WiFi Intelligence enabled on your Xfinity Gateway, you can’t manage the WiFi Network Name/Password in the Admin Tool.
If you need to change your WiFi network's name and password for all other Xfinity rented Gateway models, check out the quickest and easiest ways to get it done.
Looking for your gateway model number? Review the equipment’s bottom panel, use the Xfinity app, or refer to the Overview of Xfinity Gateways.
Note: You may also see your network name referred to as an "SSID" and your password as a "Network Key."
If you don’t need instructions, go directly to the Admin Tool.
Why should I change my network name and password?
Setting your own network name and password helps protect your home network from outside users, viruses and other threats. If you leave your wireless network unprotected, other people can:
- Use your internet connection.
- Access files on your computers.
- Find out private information like passwords and credit card numbers.
Log in to the Admin Tool
- With a laptop, phone, or tablet that’s connected to your network, open a web browser and go to the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1.
- If you’ve already changed your Admin Tool ID and password, log in with your information.
- Then go to the steps to change your network name and password.
- Pro tip: This username and password aren’t the same as your WiFi name and password.
- If you haven’t changed the username and password, log in with:
- Username: admin
- Password: password
- If you changed your ID or password but don't remember it, you can do a factory reset to restore the default settings.
- If you’ve already changed your Admin Tool ID and password, log in with your information.
- Then, click LOGIN.
-
- Note: Depending on which gateway you have, your screen might not look exactly like this.
- However, the steps are the same, so you can still follow along.
- Note: Depending on which gateway you have, your screen might not look exactly like this.
- Once you log in, the page asks you to set up a new ID and password for the Admin Tool.
- You’ll do this first and change your network name and password after.
- Click Change Password at the top right.
- Enter a new password. Make sure it has:
- At least eight characters.
- Both uppercase and lowercase letters.
- At least one number.
- Type your new password again in the Re-enter New Password field. Then, click SAVE.
- The next time you need to use the Admin Tool, log in with this new ID and password.
Change your WiFi network name and password
Connect your laptop, phone, or tablet directly to your gateway with hard-wired/Ethernet cable or connect wirelessly to your in-home WiFi network (not the "xfinitywifi" network).
If you haven't changed your WiFi network name and password before, look for the default network name and password on the label on the side or bottom of your wireless gateway:
Then, if you want to change it:
- Log in to the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1.
- Go to the left-hand menu, and pick Gateway, then Connection, and then Wi-Fi.
- Under Private Wi-Fi Network, you'll see the Name (SSID) of your WiFi network. Make a note of it.
- Click Edit on the right to change your network name.
- The option you see depends on your gateway model.
- If you see two network names (one for the 2.4 GHz and one for the 5 GHz band), click Edit on each one and enter a new name. (For best results, enter the same name for both.)
- If you see two network names (one for the 2.4 GHz and one for the 5 GHz band), click Edit on each one and enter a new name. (For best results, enter the same name for both.)
- If you don’t see these options, you may need to change your WiFi network name a different way.
- To see your network password, check the box next to Show Network Password and make a note of it.
- To change your WiFi network information, type in the Network Name and/or Network Password field and click SAVE SETTINGS.
- To change your WiFi network information, type in the Network Name and/or Network Password field and click SAVE SETTINGS.
- All set! Now that you have your WiFi network name and password, you can connect your phone, laptop, tablet and any other device to your network.
- You'll need to sign back into your WiFi network on each device with your new network name and password.
Tips to reset your gateway
You can reset your gateway to its factory default settings if you don't remember your network name and password and can't get into the Admin Tool.
Note: You should only do this if all the other options haven't worked.
Here's how:
- Unplug your gateway's power.
- Press and hold the Reset button using a pen or an unfolded paperclip to push the recessed button on the back panel of the gateway for at least 15 seconds and then release it.
- Plug the gateway back in.
- Hold the button for another 30 seconds.
- Wait for your gateway to restart.
- Log in with the password on your gateway's label.
- Change your name and password to something easy to remember.
Any devices connected to the WiFi (laptop, tablet, phone, etc.) will be disconnected. When you’re done, reconnect to your WiFi and enter your new network name and password.
If you own your own modem, you can go to the manufacturer’s website for more specific information on your device.
Your wireless gateway's default security mode
The default security mode for every wireless gateway is WPA/WPA2. This gives the best security and performance for newer devices. It’s part of WPA security, an advanced mode of wireless security that is extremely difficult to bypass.
Note: WPA security doesn’t connect with some older operating systems. If you don't use a wireless gateway, you can check your security mode in your router's user manual or administration site.
Advanced wireless gateway settings

You can also configure open ports on your wireless gateway, which is helpful if you're looking to add a game console to your home network. Learn more about port forwarding and port triggering.
Keep in mind that port forwarding may affect your overall network performance. Leaving the port open can expose your network to unwanted Internet traffic.
Port triggering is a more secure alternative because the inbound port is only open when you “turn on” a session on that port. Once the session is “turned off," the port is closed to random inbound traffic, and your WiFi network is closed to any potential hacker.
