Fall TV 2016 – How to Talk Fall TV: The Cheat Sheet

TV is the connective tissue of our culture, and you need a working knowledge of shows to sound like you are au current. Even if you are a reader, how many other people spend lunch talking about Jonathan Safran Foer’s new novel, Here I Am (and there you go, straight to snoozeville, right?) as opposed to the “blind auditions?” While it’s impossible to watch and know everything – here are a few bites to sound like you do:

  1. If someone asks what’s hot, you say, “Keifer Sutherland’s new thriller Designated Survivor is a designated hit; the premiere had huge L3 numbers AND then set an L7 record. Call it a designated hit.”
  2. If someone asks for a new show recommendation and you want to sound ahead of the curve, you say, “People of the Earth, a quirky comedy about a support group for people who’ve been abducted by aliens – and not only are the aliens hilarious, the show will be available On Demand October 17, two weeks before it’s premiere on TBS.”
  3. If someone asks if Empire is still good, you say, “Yes, still broadcast’s top-rated show behind football, but the drama’s spilled into real life. Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett are feuding with 50 Cent.”
  4. If you’re asked which new show will be canceled first, you say, “I only like good news, and so far, Atlanta and Better Things have been renewed, and This Is Us, Speechless and Keifer’s show have been give full season orders. Yay.” (Actually, don’t say ‘Yay.’)
