Post-Tribal Wrap-Up

There's a lot to unpack after last week's Tribal. The still-in-the-game-kinda jurors, Keith and Wendy leaving, and of course, Kama's betrayal of Joe. Aurora, in particular, is not thrilled with that last part.

However, Ron and Eric insist that she was left in the dark so she didn’t have to vote for Joe. That’s super sweet of them and probably a lie.

In other post-Tribal biz, Ron and Eric plant some seeds with Rick and David, telling them that not only did classic Lesu vote for David, but they were sooooper mean about it. Hmm…nice touch.

Then, Eric punctuates this point telling them that if they stay the course, they'll all make the family visit. Interesting. I thought the point was to get to the end and be awarded by your peers. But, I've only been watching this show for 19 years.

And finally, Wardog, Lauren, and Kelley realize that they were just hit with a doozy. Now they need to bring David and Rick back into the fold and hopefully get Aurora to split with Kama.

At the Isle of Extinction

Joe’s there. He says things. A tear is shed.

Reward Challenge Time: The tribe will be split into two teams by a random drawing. They’ll swim out to a tower and retrieve puzzle pieces. The first team to complete the puzzle will win Chinese take-out.

Quick Aside: Chinese take-out? That sounds kind of amazing.

Result: Wardog, Eric, Rick, Julia, Victoria, and Aurora won the reward.

At Vata Beach

Julie tells everyone that she now knows what it's like to not win a reward. Honestly, I'm surprised Lauren didn't stab her in the face for that comment.

Meanwhile, Kelley mends fences with David. David is concerned that they don't have the numbers to take on Kama, but Kelley thinks they can flip Aurora. David's into this, because he's pretty sure he can get Rick to side with them.

CUT TO: Rick giving Wardog the SARCASTIC BUSINESS! Seriously, this was hilarious. Here are some actual quotes…

“I’m dying to get back together with the old Lesu.”

“I know that I can trust you guys.”

“I reallllllly want to get back together with you all.”

Once Wardog picks up what he’s putting down, he accuses Rick of playing with his emotions instead of his head.

David and Rick meet up at the water well to discuss this plan. David makes some really good points about them not driving the ship. But, Rick doesn't think they'd ever get the numbers if they side with Lesu. Eventually Rick asks for David's half of the idol…and David doesn't give it to him. Very interesting.

Quick Aside: Naturally, you’re going to root for an underdog and Lesu is definitely an underdog right now. Classic Kama hasn’t done a thing wrong. They haven’t been mean to anyone. They’re playing a smart game. Taking that into account, even though I’m naturally rooting for Lesu, I think Rick really needs to weigh his trust for Lesu vs. his trust of David. Losing that ride-or-die final-two partner is a big deal. Especially when that guy is holding half of an idol.

At the Isle of Extinction

A new advantage clue shows up and it really bums Reem out because she was hoping to take a nap. I get it. I don't want anything interrupting my naps either.

The scramble is on and…Aubry finds it! She's given the opportunity to practice the next challenge (some kind of rope/post-based affair) as well as an extra vote to give to someone in the game. I'm assuming that person will be Aurora.

Immunity Challenge Time: The players will stand on a beam and press a block against another beam using their heads. The last person with their block in place wins immunity.

Result: OK, there’s a lot to dig into here. It came down to Aurora, Victoria, and Lauren and they kept alluding to the fact that Lauren was getting dizzy. Eventually, she blacked out and fell off of her perch. Fortunately, the drop wasn’t that far, but it was still a very scary moment.

The challenge kept going as medical was brought in. Aurora immediately started to negotiate with Victoria to get her to step down to prove that Kama still had Aurora's back. Aurora making this plea while everyone was still uncertain about Lauren's health really rubbed some of the other players the wrong way, Julie in particular.

Fortunately, Lauren was OK and seemed to be more embarrassed than anything.

Eventually, Victoria’s block fell and Aurora won immunity without having to make a deal.

Pre-Tribal Politicking

When the players arrived back at camp, Aurora noticed that an extra vote had been added to her bag. She assumes it's from Joe or Aubry.

Ron and Eric are really pushing the narrative that if they all stick together, they'll make it to the family visit. It gets brought up so much that it should been a drinking game…if you want someone to die.

The Kama Six is understandably targeting Kelley and Lauren, with the plan to work with Rick and David to split the votes between the two.

However, Wardog is out there trying to open lines of communication with Julia and Gavin. In fact, he gets the idea into Julia’s head that Eric and Ron will eventually use Rick and David to dwindle the original Kama Six’s numbers.

She tests out this theory by asking Eric if they could target David first. Eric responds with some combination of "not yet" and "family visit."

Julia and Gavin approach Victoria with a plan to vote out Ron or Eric. However, Victoria thinks it's too early for that. I think I agree with Victoria. Especially when you don't know where the idols are.

Tribal Time

Eric is convinced that the "Kama Seven" will stick together, and there are other Lesu "packages" that they're working with. This amuses Wardog because he wasn't given any marching orders. I originally thought he was amused because they said "packages."

Rick admits to being one of those Lesu members, saying he's done with his former tribe after being voted out. He even literally says "I'm against you guys." I appreciate the nod to "Survivor" Hall of Famer Sandra Diaz-Twine.

David makes a good point that you need to be a pilot or a passenger, and a pilot will end up with a strong resume. However, right now he's a passenger.

Voting Time: Eric votes for Kelley and the rest of the votes are lost to the magic of editing.

JPro tallies and returns. He asks if anyone wants to play an idol and…nobody does! Risky!

Alright, we’ve got one vote for Kelley, two votes for Lauren, one vote for Kelley, five votes for Eric, and the eighth person voted out of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” and the fifth member of the jury is…Eric.

Ooo…so it looks like Victoria, Gavin, Julia, and Aurora all flipped, while Rick stuck with the Kama vote.

Verdict: OK, my feelings about the Isle of Extinction aside, this was an amazing episode. We got strong strategy from a wide variety of players and the result opens things up for all kinds of chaos.

Good times.

Wardog: One of the best ways to measure a “Survivor” player is by how well they maneuver when they’re on the bottom. Wardog really, really impressed me this week.
Lauren and Kelley: It took nerves of steel to hold onto those idols this week. Very impressive.
Julia and Gavin: I don’t hate this move at all, but I might be in the same camp as Victoria thinking it was too soon.
David: It had to be really tough to say no to Rick and a few more safe votes.
Ron: I can’t bring myself to give you a bad grade. I think you and Eric were doing a good job, you just didn’t see the winds changing.
Rick: Some of the best players have ended up working with people who have stabbed them in the back. Seems like a mistake to shut a door completely.
Aurora: Congrats on the challenge win, but you read the room badly on the timing of your negotiation.
Julie and Victoria: I can’t give you full credit if you don’t show your work.

Power Ranking Results: Gabby Pascuzzi had Eric in spot eleven, I had Eric in spot twelve. So, the current score is Team Gabby 68, Team Gordon 67.
