NBC’s latest foray into the live musical genre, ‘Hairspray Live,’ pulled in 9 million total viewers last night, and garnered a 2.3 in the 18-49 demo.
These numbers represent a dip from last year’s musical, ‘The Wiz,’ which gathered 11.5 million total viewers and a 3.4 in the demo.
Reviews for the time honored classic were fairly favorable, but it seems like the move to a new night (the musicals have aired on Thursdays in past years) didn't help pull in a bigger audience. The move to Wednesday was precluded by NBC airing half of the Thursday Night Football package.
The flagbearer (at least ratings wise) remains the initial musical NBC launched with, 'The Sound of Music,' which nabbed 18.6 million viewers in 2013. From there, the audience dipped in 2014 with 'Peter Pan Live,' 9.2 million, before rebounding last year with 'The Wiz.'
Still on tap for NBC is a live telling of ‘A Few Good Men,’ and then ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ starring Jennifer Lopez in 2017.
