In the fall of 2014, the char acter of Leslie Shay died tragically on the job in the third season opener of NBC’s “Chicago Fire.”
The popular character (and equally popular actress Lauren German, who played her) didn’t fully get erased from the show even after a successful investigation to prove she was murdered that was led by her BFF, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney). To the show’s credit, Shay is still talked about frequently in remembrance of what the entire house (and the show) lost.
Since Shay was the sole LGBT regular character on “Chicago Fire” and we haven’t seen a regular gay character since her departure, isn’t it time to see another LGBT character grace the popular series, which was just picked up for a fifth season during the 2016-2017 season?
Writers/executive producers Derek Haas, Michael Brandt and Danielle Gelber told me they are well aware of the impact of Shay and how they made sure her sexuality was a natural part of the show and stories.
And while it’s understandable the creative powers that be might not have wanted to bring another gay character immediately or it might have been perceived merely as a replacement, what is the future of LGBT characters and stories on all the Chicago-based series?
Let’s find out what they had to say on the red carpet at the recent #NBCChicagoDay junket held in the Windy City.
"Chicago Med" and "Chicago Fire" air back-to-back starting at 9pm on Tuesdays. "Chicago PD" airs Wednesdays at 10pm. All on NBC.
