It’s Transgender Awareness Week and tonight on MTV you can see the debut of a new episode of the networks “True Life” series.
In “True Life: I’m Genderqueer,” two young people who reject traditional gender labels and identify as neither man or woman are explored.
The episode profiles Jacob (24), who lives in New York City and defines their identity without using labels. As Jacob puts it, "it's about embracing the fact that gender is complicated." The episode follow's Jacob's evolving relationship with their father, who feels uncomfortable with Jacob's open embrace of being genderqueer.
Also in the episode, we meet Brennen (17), who lives with his parents in Florida and struggles to tell them that he identifies as genderqueer and rejects the female pronouns that they use for him. As Brennen opens up to his parents, he begins to live his authentic self.
The ‘Look Different’ Campaign launched a hub at http://Genderqueer.LookDifferent.org with resources and information on genderqueer and transgender issues.
“True Life: I’m Genderqueer” airs tonight at 11pm on MTV.
