Whether you follow politics or not, you’ve probably heard the name Barney Frank spoken more than a few times. The documentary, “Compared to What?: The Improbably Journey of Barney Frank” airs Friday night on Showtime and is an entertaining as any doc film out there and that’s because of Frank himself.
The best way to describe him is as a 'character' who, over the 40 years of rare and archival footage seen in the film, reveals himself as a public figure who hid in the closet and then came out and became one of the strongest supporters of same-sex marriage. We also get to see him go from the Halls of Congress to streets of Boston to alongside his partner, Jim Ready, and become the first member of Congress to enter into a same-sex marriage.
Groundbreaking, yes. Entertaining, yes. Informative, yes. All these things are a part of this film, exec produced by Alec Baldwin, Geralyn Dreyfous, Jamie Wolf and directed/produced by Sheila Canavan and Michael Chandler.
