On the season premiere of ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” the show went somewhere it hasn’t in the past—it added a gay character.
In the opening moments of the episode, we meet Joey Guttierez (Juan Pablo Raba), who has the power to melt metal but has no idea how to control it. Our team from S.H.I.E.L.D. quickly contains him and brings him back to the new and improved ship.
In a very subtle way, Joey’s sexuality is revealed. First, when Joey is questioned by Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki), she mentions he has an ex-boyfriend. Later in the episode, Daisy tells him he has to keep his inhuman status a secret, and Joey comments that he kept a secret before and it was better once he let it out. (Yes, that secret.)
While it’s too early to find out how deep we’ll delve into Joey’s story, I had the chance to talk with series stars Clark Gregg and Chloe Bennet earlier this week and they talked about the new season and the reveal of the first gay character in the series.
