Is there a room in a land based on fairy tale characters and stories for LGBT characters?
For ABC’s long-running series “Once Upon A Time,” the answer is yes.
During a story arc in the show’s third season, romantic feelings were expressed between Mulan (Jamie Chung) and Aurora (Sarah Bolger) but things didn’t go beyond some swoony-eyed moments before Aurora became pregnant with her husband’s child and Mulan departed.
However, as show creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz said today during a Q&A following a press screening of the season premiere, they will dive into a story that includes an LGBT relationship this year.
“I would say that we know that that community have been big supporters of the show and we would love to be able to tell a love story that reflects that,” said Kitsis.
Knowing Chung is back for both halves of the new season and Aurora is currently present in Storybrooke could easily make viewers think that this relationship would involve the two characters but the producers weren’t confirming (or denying) anything.
“We want the show to reflect the world as it is now,” Horowitz explained, “and whether that’s going to be with any particular character we’re not going to say.”
The producers also didn’t reveal whether this relationship would appear in the first half of the season or in the second half that will air in early 2016. The first half of season five dives heavily into the savior, Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), going dark and becoming ‘Dark Swan.’
Could there be room in trying to save Emma for an LGBT story? The producers kept mum on specifics. "It is something we're going to do this year," Kitsis while Horowitz added, "It's something we want to do this year and it's something that we think is due and important to do on the show because it's the world we live in."
