Are the women taking over on Starz’s drama, “Power“?
Well, Angela (Lela Loren) is trying to prove that Jamie (Omari Hardwick) is Ghost (or disprove since she’s kinda in love with the guy). Holly (Lucy Walters) isn’t quite getting what it means to get out of town. And Tasha (Naturi Naughton), well, she is having her cake and eating it, too, by ordering Jamie around AND sleeping with her puppet, Shawn (Sinqua Walls).
What is all this female empowerment? It's "Power," dammit, and it's thriving in its second season and has become one of the best summer TV surprises this year.
Thank creator Courtney Kemp Agboh and her team of pushing-the-envelope writers for speeding the story along instead of taking their sweet ass time and making us bored. It’s actually impossible to get bored with “Power” since there are so many power plays and back stabbing and, in last week’s stellar episode, a rat put inside a potato sack and then put over a dude’s head. OUCH! (Bravo, Gary Lennon, for writing a scene that made even me close my eyes for a quick second!)
But you also have to thank the team of “Power” actors, who bring it whether a scene is quiet or loud and whether something is darkly serious or sometimes so twisted you can’t help but giggle a little. With all this craziness going on, I’m waiting for the usual calm-and-collected Jamie to truly lose it and give Hardwick a chance to cut loose, too. I’m also waiting for more Victor Garber as Simon Stern, who just makes every scene a bit more fun.
If you’re afraid “Power” won’t be able to keep this momentum up, fear not. This week’s episode, “You’re Not The Man” (written by Vladimir Cvetko and directed by Dennie Gordon) doesn’t let up on the gas pedal one bit and if there’s one stand-out among many, it’s Joseph Sikora, who shows just how crazy Tommy can get when Holly is out of his life. It was one thing to have her in a hospital bed but after she tied him to the bed in last week’s episode and gave him a ultimatum about taking Ghost down (he declined), she left and, well, Tommy is unhinged and that is nothing but fun to watch for viewers. Sikora’s wailing of ‘Holly!” is easily the new “Stella!”
Need a taste of what Sikora is serving up? Check out this exclusive clip sent over by the good people at Starz of Tommy telling Ghost about who is really in charge. (Hint – for now at least, it’s the WOMEN!!)
The second season of “Power” still has several episodes left so if you haven’t jumped on the train, go back and do it now (right here on XFINITY TV, if you wish) and hold on for the rest of this beyond-fun ride.
“Power” airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. on Starz.
