Hilarious ‘black-ish’ Episode Will Have You Rolling

OK, I admit it, I had grown a bit skeptical of “black-ish’s” ability to bring the laughs.

While some episodes elicited a chuckle here or there, I wasn’t bowling over with laughter. Some of the jokes, particularly Dre’s office scenes, were corny, in my humble opinion.

I was thinking about this just hours ago while contemplating whether to watch last night’s episode, “Elephant in the Room.”

Fortunately for me, I gave in because that episode was hilarious!

I loved it and thought the writing was strong, and the jokes were good.

To sum it up, Democrats Dre and Bow have a near meltdown when Andre Jr. tells them he joined the Young Republican Club to impress a girl. When Dre’s mom Ruby finds out, she’s calling on Jesus to save him. The elder Johnsons quickly arrange a meeting with the girl’s parents, hoping to find out how they can be black and Republican. Oh, and Zoey gets glasses, which brings out another side of Diane (Marsai Martin is brill in this role!).

Between my laughter, I reminded myself that “black-ish”  is still navigating its first season, so it may have some hits and misses.

I’m glad this episode helped change my mind. I’m looking forward to watching next week’s season finale with guests Sean “Diddy” Combs and Mary J. Blige. It looks like the Johnsons will travel back in time to learn about “Pops’ Pops’ Pops’,” (yes, that’s the episode title) great-great grandfather, Drexler Johnson. Should be good.

"black-ish" airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Watch the latest episode below.
