Still not completely sure what the T in LGBT is all about?
It’s okay. You’re not alone but as trans people become more and more visible in our world, it’s the perfect time for “Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word,” right?
The Emmy-nominated actress/activist first burst onto the scene with her role as a trans character Sophia on the Netflix series “Orange Is The New Black” and has made it her mission to spread not only the word about trans people but also educate people about what it means to be trans, how to use the right pronouns and the unique challenges trans people face.
In the documentary, which airs Friday at 7pm simultaneously on MTV and Logo, seven trans youth are featured and talk about their realizing they were trans, how they’ve dealt with family and friends (some who are supportive, some who are not) and some of the bullying and oppostion they’ve faced.
I had an early look at the doc and it’s not only eye-opening and heartfelt but also an amazing tool for anyone who isn’t clear on what being trans means and wants to know the varied journeys these teens have been on. And it’s no coincidence that the doc is airing the day after Spirit Day (which is today! Wear your purple!) and is also a part of MTV’s “Look Different” campaign.
“Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word” airs Friday at 7pm on MTV and Logo. For more on the documentary, visit the Look Different website.
