Ledisi Expected to Show Out at TV One’s ‘Interludes’ Concert

If you haven’t heard Ledisi’s album “The Truth,” baby, you don’t know what you’re missing. It dropped earlier this year and like its title, it is the truth!

Fortunately for me I’ll get the opportunity to watch her perform songs from it and her other jams tonight as part of  TV One’s “Hello Beautiful Interludes Live.” Oh, and I’ll also get a chance to sit down and chat with her afterward. Yep, it all goes down in Philly tonight at 8 p.m. ET at Theatre of the Living Arts. Very exciting!

“Interludes” is an intimate concert series that TV One showcases throughout the year. In August, the network spotlighted Kem, who did his thing in Atlanta and sat down with me to talk about it afterward. In May, the network featured Jennifer Hudson, who served up sexiness, confidence and powerhouse vocals during that New York concert. Recaps of Kem and Jennifer’s performances, including slideshows, interviews and the full concerts, were featured on CelebrateBlackTV.com.  Alicia Keys, John Legend, Trey Songz along with Babyface and Toni Braxton are a few of the other past “Interludes” performers. It’s a very cool event.

Now, “Hello Beautiful Interludes Live with Ledisi” won’t be my first time experiencing her live. I’ve seen her perform at the Essence Music Festival and earlier this year during the NAACP Image Awards afterparty where Stevie Wonder joined her onstage. So I know, like previous “Interludes” concerts, I’ll get a fabulous show.

Ledisi has been around for a minute. "The Truth" is her seventh studio album and she's been up for eight Grammy Awards. Despite this, she isn't a household name for many but for the First Family, oh, they love them some Ledisi. First Lady Michelle Obama told People magazine in 2010 that she was listening to Ledisi on her iPod, adding, "she's got that really pretty voice." Ledisi has performed at the 2012 Democratic National Convention and at the White House at least four times, including at the 50th birthday bashes for both President Barack Obama and the first lady. Yeah, honey, you may want to check her out if you haven’t.

I agree with Mrs. O, Ledisi is very talented. She has great vocal range and while her recent projects have been more R&B focused, she can do jazz (she used to be in a jazz band), opera, funk, rock and gospel music. Oh, and she acts, too. She will star alongside an all-star cast that includes David Oyelowo and Oprah Winfrey in the Ava DuVernay-directed (and Oprah-produced) Martin Luther King, Jr. biopic “Selma.” The film, in which Ledisi will play legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, hits theaters on January 9, 2015. Ledisi being tapped to play the Queen of Gospel tells you two things: 1) that this girl's got soul and 2) can sang! I'm telling, if you, she's one you want to check out.

"Hello Beautiful Interludes Live with Ledisi" will air November 29 on TV One and will be available on CelebrateBlackTV.com with my red carpet coverage and interview with her. In the meantime, follow our "Interludes" coverage on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook using the hashtags #HBinterludesLIVE and #XFINITY.
