Dirty Thirty: ‘Purple Rain’ Celebrates Anniversary

Prince's "Purple Rain" turns 30! (Image: Comcast)

“Purple Rain” celebrated the dirty thirty Sunday and all I can say is wow! Has that much time really passed?

I don’t recall seeing “Purple Rain’s” trailer back then (you can watch it below) but I do remember watching the movie on VHS with my parents. I specifically recall being told to cover my eyes during inappropriate scenes like when The Kid (Prince) told Apollonia, “You have to purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.” Yep, that little strip-down was a no-no for us to witness. Other than that, the story was pretty good and it was Prince’s first film. Not bad!

And while I had the pleasure of staring at this Michael Jackson ‘Thriller” poster every night before I went to bed, my friend had this poster of Prince and the Revolution hanging in her bedroom. We were barely out of diapers and I was in love with both musicians! In my mind, they were my husbands (I left Michael for Prince) and they fathered my Cabbage Patch Kids. Mmmhmm, the mind of a 5-year-old.

What I remember most about “Purple Rain,” though, is its awesome soundtrack (Prince won several accolades including an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score). My dad, like everyone else, blasted a lot of Prince back then. My sisters and I loved dancing to “Let’s Go Crazy,” “I Would Die 4 U” and “Baby I’m a Star.” But can you guess which song is my favorite from “Purple Rain,” like, I still blast it today?  “The Beautiful Ones.” There’s something very sensual about that song (I didn’t realize that ’til I was 21) and I love when he belts out “I want you!!!’ Yaaassss, baby!

Oh, Prince Rogers Nelson. Though I have yet to see you in concert (my sister said Prince was phenomenal at this year’s Essence Music Festival), it’s so great to still have you around, sexier and more vibrant than ever. I look forward to you creating another landmark soundtrack that we (you included) will in another 30 years.

P.S. Check out this video from “Chappelle Show’s” "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories" about Prince and the Revolution below. Hilarious!
