June Cinema Asian America Highlights

"Main Tera Hero." (Balaji Motion Pictures)

It’s June 2014, and that means one thing that many have been waiting four years for – World Cup! This month, in honor of the festivities and matches in Brazil, Cinema Asian American brings a collection of Asian soccer films – all that explore the drama, glory and tensions of futbol! From the UK comes the classic “Bend It Like Beckham,” while from North Korea comes the fascinating documentary “Hana, Dul, Sed,” which follows the experiences of the North Korean national women’s soccer team. From Iran is Jafar Panahi’s “Offside,” which examines gender relations and soccer mania and follows a group of women who are forbidden to enter a soccer stadium to watch a World Cup qualifying match. From Hong Kong is “Homeless FC,” a moving portrait of a team of homeless men, united by their passion for soccer. Finally from South Korea is “A Barefoot Dream,” an inspiring film based on the true story of a Korean soccer coach who transforms a youth team in East Timor into an international sensation.

Our new release collection is equally exciting: from Thailand comes the latest from action superstar Tony Jaa; “The Protector 2,” where he brings his special style of bone-crushing Muay Thai to a outrun a murder he did not commit. Co-starring the Wu Tang Clan’s RZA. Imtiaz Ali’s “Highway” is already one of the best reviewed Indian films of the year, and stars Ali Bhatt as a young woman who is kidnapped just before her wedding, but begins to develop a strange bond with her kidnapper (Randeep Hooda). And of course, another highlight this month is, you guessed it, “Sneezing Baby Panda: The Movie.” Those who were captivated by the much-seen viral video of a sneezing panda can feast on this feature length mockumentary about an Australian zoologist’s quest to save her zoo and which stars…a sneezing baby panda.
