'Revenge' Is Back: What's Next For Nolan/Patrick? Has Victoria Met Her Match?

Justin Hartley & Madeleine Stowe (ABC/Disney)

Anyone else excited for new episodes of ABC’s Revengeto begin this Sunday?

After a sluggish second season, the third season is back in fine-tuned form with more backstabbing, treachery, bed hopping and more acts of revenge by just about everyone as well as main Revenge-r Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp).

And one of the highlights of this season has been the addition of Justin Hartley as Victoria Grayson’s (Madeleine Stowe) long lost son, Patrick, who has been having an on-again/off-again romance with Nolan Ross (Gabriel Mann).

What’s to come with the love birds? Has the show gotten any negative feedback for making a same sex romance be such a big part of this mainstream show? And how will things get more complicated for Victoria when the first Mrs. Grayson (Gail O’Grady) shows up?

I grabbed a few minutes with Showrunner/Exec Producer Sunil Nayar to get the scoop.

Going into the Nolan/Patrick storyline this season, were you concerned at all with how audiences would take to it?

Sunil Nayar: Honestly, it was sort of exactly the opposite in that we thought, we have this character in Nolan, and then we have this new character coming in, Patrick. Almost from the get-go we thought well, this is an opportunity for a show on a network that supports these kinds of story lines, and we also, toward these storylines, are saying there’s no difference in doing this than any other storyline on the show. It’s letting a character, be it a man or a woman, sort of experience the idea of love, and betrayal, and commitment, and hardship with another person, be it a man or a woman.

We were bursting to tell these stories because it's a fascinating dynamic because it's not the love triangle that you usually see. It's a person torn between a passionate love of two people with whom they want to be in a relationship. It's the person who's torn between the love of the person who's their mother, who they're just getting to know, and their lover, who they're just getting to know. So that was really for us what the power of the story was, and so I think the fact that it was a gay relationship was almost secondary to the fact that it's just a powerful relationship story that we got to tell.

Is Nolan’s arc in these episodes pretty much with Patrick, or is he also involved with some Emily things, or other things out there?

SN: Oh absolutely. He’s fully in support of what Emily’s doing. I mean, you’ll see how he deals with the nature of [Emily’s] blackout situations. It affects him very deeply, and then coming up later in the season he also has sort of a young protégé from prison join him who also sort of rattles his entire world.

I have to throw in real quick that I love Nolan and Aiden (Barry Sloane) being roommates.

SN: Aren’t they great? They’re so funny together.

Justin Hartley (ABC/Disney)

Is that going to continue? They are so different and they even refer to themselves as kind of an odd couple, but I love that.

SN: No, we try to get them together and the beauty part is that they both have this love for Emily which allows them to kind of get together when they’re worried about who she is, what she’s doing, or if they’re helping her to plan, but the two of them on-screen are a joy. We loved putting them together.

I can't wait to see more Gail O'Grady as Conrad's first wife, Stevie. What is Stevie's relationship with Victoria? Is it amicable or are they kind of villainous with each other?

SN: They’re sort of villainous to each other. Victoria was really her greatest advocate in the past, and we will obviously mine what kind of caused the dissolution of Conrad’s marriage and what led him to be with Victoria. No, I think it’s very safe to say that they are not having a warm reunion.

Will we have some flashbacks to see that time in their lives?

SN: We’re thinking about the idea of flashbacks, and we’re sort of toying with it to see how that all works out.
