Watch: Stephen Colbert Returns to Pay Tribute to His Late Mother

Stephen Colbert talks about his mom, Lorna, in 2012

A solemn Stephen Colbert returned to “The Colbert Report” on Wednesday after taking time off as a result of his mother’s death.

Colbert, who rarely breaks character on his show, opted to open the episode with a moving tribute to his late mother Lorna, who died at the age of 92. Lorna Tuck Colbert, who was born in Larchmont, New York and had eleven children with Colbert's father, suffered tragedy when an plane crash killed her husband, brother and three of her sons.

A visibly shaken Colbert shared stories of his mom for the first four minutes of the show, telling viewers how she met her husband, her devotion to her children, as well as her last days on Earth and how she wouldn’t miss his show for the world.

“Her love for her family and her faith in God somehow gave her the strength not only to go on but to love life without bitterness and instill in all of us a gratitude for every day we have together,” Colbert said.
