‘DWTS’ Double Elimination Sends Two Celebs Home

The “Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars” Monday night performance show was chaotic, to say the least, with a rare technical glitch and trio dances that were way too bizarre for my taste. But after the dust settled, there was no escaping the fact that on Tuesday, TWO of our stars and their partners would be eliminated. I decided the couples with the lowest cumulative scores over the past two weeks–Kirstie Alley and Apolo Anton Ohno–would be the ones going home. Although Kirstie provided lots of laughs with Maks Chmerkovskiy, her score of just 79 made her extremely vulnerable, and although Apolo got over his spat with partner Karina Smirnoff, some have questioned their chemistry this season. Would that, along with the second to lowest score, be enough to send Apolo and Karina packing?

Again, the show used behind-the-scenes clips to illustrate what went down last night. “Our first perfect score!” Melissa exulted after her individual dance with Tony Dovolani earned a 30. Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough’s Veteran’s Day dance left the ex-gymnast with chills because of the military folks in the audience.

Then, the verdict for two couples–Tom Bergeron told Melissa and Tony they were going to the semifinals! And so were Shawn and Derek! No shocker there and I suspected Gilles Marini would soon join them in representing fabulous season 8 in the semis.

Back to the past of last night’s footage and Kirstie and Maks were giving high fives to military men in the crowd. Kelly Monaco was, oddly, standing outside in the “DWTS” parking lot talking about the challenges of the competition (without her better half, Val Chmerkovskiy, by her side).

Now it was time for the first elimination. It was Kirstie vs. Kelly. Tom said Kirstie would be leaving! So, I was right, at least, on the first star being sent home. Kirstie said, "the second time around was special to me. I learned more about dancing. I just love dancing. I want to thank our fans." Kirstie blew kisses to the audience and she and Maks were surrounded by all their "DWTS" pals, wishing them well.

Once again, the couples would be picking dance styles for their competitors:
Kelly and Val chose “caveman” hustle for Tony and Melissa
Emmitt and Cheryl picked “knight rider” banghra for Shawn and Derek
Apolo and Karina picked “mad monk” merengue for Gilles and Peta
Gilles and Peta chose “big top” jazz for Apolo and Karina
Shawn and Derek picked “espionage” lindy hop for Emmitt and Cheryl

Which meant the just-saved Kelly and Val would be dancing to "surfer" flamenco and a reporter backstage said she bet they'd dance to the surf song from Pulp Fiction. These sure were twists on the usual dance themes.

More backstage footage from last night and the judges kibitzing about Apolo and Karina's tango-they liked it! They really liked it! Then Gilles and Peta celebrated after impressing the panel with their "Top Gun" flyer routine. Emmitt and Cheryl made a mistake in their waltz and the judges cried, "Oh, what a shame!," which we hadn't seen last night.

So, three couples were left with Apolo, Gilles, and Emmitt on the chopping block. Tom gave one celebrity the good news-Emmitt was safe! So it was Apolo or Gilles leaving us tonight. Len said he truly loved the remaining couples. Two hunks, so what would happen? Was I right about Apolo?

But, no! The All-Star going home was….Gilles! His wife was devastated in the audience. Gilles said it was an incredible experience and Peta was his angel. He also thanked his wife, what a class act. I was stunned because Gilles and Peta had such amazing chemistry and she was defending pro champ.

Next week, the remaining stars will perform to the music of Michael Jackson, but without his huge fan, actor Gilles.
