Twice Upon a Time: Jorge Garcia Says His ‘Once’ Giant Will Likely Return

This Sunday, Jorge Garcia makes his “Once Upon a Time” debut as The Giant from the tale of “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

As Garcia explains it, The Giant will cause trouble for Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) as they scale the beanstalk in an attempt to find a way back into Storybrooke. “I’m what’s waiting for them up there and I don’t take too kindly to intruders,” he tells in an exclusive interview. “I’m kind of what stands in the way of them being able to fulfill their mission.”

Garcia says that his Giant differs from the classic "Beanstalk" big guy in a few key ways. "The Giant in the original 'Beanstalk' is kind of dumb, you know?" he says. "I don't feel that this guy is as dumb. But he does seem much more angry."

So angry, in fact, that much of Garcia’s lines consist purely of “growls and grunts,” he says.

Anger, of course, is not an emotion synonymous with the affable Hurley, the character Garcia’s best known for playing on “Lost” for six seasons. Neither are growls and grunts, for that matter. “It’s definitely a step away from anything that you may have seen me in before,” he admits. Needless to say, The Giant will not be uttering the word “dude” at any point on Sunday night. “Uh, no,” he says.

For Garcia, the opportunity to literally play a larger than life character like The Giant was a dream come true, especially, he says, because of his rather elaborate costume. "It was like the most extravagant thing I've ever worn before, and it was just really great," he admits. "It's this big robe with all these bangle and bauble things that hang off of it. Then there's this huge belt that goes across that they have to cinch me into pulled together like a corset. So that changes your posture and creates a kind of majestic feeling in you that it's hard not to feel giant in it. The costume did a lot of the work in terms of putting the character together."

Although The Giant is thus far only slated to appear in Sunday’s episode, Garcia says he has spoken with series executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz about coming back for more. “I just had a call last week that they’re looking to bring me back in a month for something, so it looks like I will be returning.”

Garcia says Kitsis and Horowitz even provided him with a juicy origins story. "Whether they want to fully write and tell that origins story to the audience, that's a possibility," he says. "They also talked about what The Giant would be like if he was brought into Storybrooke and stuff like that as well. We'll see what they come up with."

For now, Garcia says he’d just settle for a chance to share a scene with his good friend Lana Parrilla (Regina/The Evil Queen). After missing each other on “Spin City,” and being involved in separate “Lost” storylines, Garcia is itching for some screen time together. “We’re inching closer and closer to that moment in our professional careers where we’d get to do a scene together,” he says. “Hopefully something like that will happen soon.”
