Viewers are used to seeing her in attack mode as wealthy villainess Victoria Grayson on the addictive drama “Revenge,” but it was a different story on TV Wednesday when Madeleine Stowe defended friend Mel Gibson during her appearance on “Katie.”

Yes, apparently Mel Gibson, whose reputation and career imploded after his perceived racist rants and hate-filled baby-mama meltdowns went public, has at least a few friends left in Hollywood (besides Jodie Foster).

“He’s very tortured by what is going on,” Stowe told Katie Couric of the troubled actor, with whom she starred in the 2002 film, “We Were Soldiers.”

"I do not believe he's an anti-Semite in my heart of hearts," Stowe said. "I think that he's a very complex, deep individual."

“He has been a very good friend to me,” she added, while praising Gibson’s “tremendous humanitarian work.”

The “Revenge” star opted not to speculate about “what was going on in his heart and in his mind” when Gibson self-destructed, but Stowe explained she’s never seen that side of the actor.

"I can only tell you the Mel that I know… He was probably one of the most wonderful people on the set ever," she said. "I hope the best for him."

"Revenge" airs Sundays at 9/8c on ABC. Check your local listings for "Katie" airtimes.
