MTV has renewed its critically acclaimed series “Awkward” for a third season, the network announced Wednesday.
It’s big news for the popular summer show in more ways than one. Season 3 of “Awkward” will be “supersized,” featuring 20 episodes — that’s nearly double the episode order for its first two seasons. The show’s second season averages 1.8 million total viewers a week.
"Lauren Iungerich's creative vision, coupled with this extraordinarily talented cast, make 'Awkward' the perfect series for MTV," said David Janollari, Head of MTV Programming, in a statement. "Critics and our audience alike have fallen in love with 'Awkward,' and we're thrilled to bring this terrific series back for a third, supersized season."
The renewal comes on the heels of a wave of “Awkward” good news.
Series star Ashley Rickards received a Critics Choice Television Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series and was also nominated for a Teen Choice Award, while costar Beau Mirchoff recently won the Teen Choice Award for “Choice TV Breakout Star.”
A new episode of “Awkward” airs Thursday at 10:30 p.m. (ET) on MTV.
