‘DWTS’ Spins a Double Elimination as Two Celebs Head Home

Henry Byalikov, Maria Menounos, Derek Hough on "Dancing with the Stars" (ABC)

With two celebrities on “Dancing with the Stars” set to go home this week, it was hard to decide which ones would lose their dancing shoes. I had picked Melissa Gilbert to be eliminated for weeks, but with her strong Monday night performances and her 48th birthday being Tuesday, I felt the fans would step up for her again, making the former “Little House” star a surprise semifinalist.

Instead, I decided young Roshon Fegan would go after a lackluster trio performance– along with Katherine Jenkins, who has been strong all season but was little known before the show. I knew I was going out on a huge limb by choosing Katherine, but thought she might split the pretty girl vote with Maria Menounos. Also, I wondered about the backlash effect of people thinking KJ already had dance experience—and who got high scores Monday despite a wardrobe malfunction. Hmm.

Anyway, it was sure to be an emotional night of bidding two stars goodbye, so here was what happened Tuesday night:

Donald Driver, Peta Murgatroyd, and Karina Smirnoff opened the show with an encore of their fabulous trio jive and once again the football star did an effortless leap over the two pro dancers at the end in what was one of the best moves of the season. He seemed to enjoy it more than last night because the pressure was off.

Behind the scenes footage from Monday night showed Donald falling off his chair backstage and the athlete still worried about not getting a perfect score. Katherine told partner Mark Ballas it wasn’t a good time to go to the bathroom right before their individual dance and talking about her wardrobe malfunction backstage after dance #2, the infamous secret agent routine.

Oh, goody! Dance Center, the comedic segment with Kenny Mayne and Jerry Rice evaluating the dancers was back, with Judge Len Goodman riding shotgun. They showed Katherine’s obsession with saying “naughty bits,” over and over, which I hadn’t noticed before. William Levy’s height, weight and other stats were all shown to be “perfect,” very funny. Then we were treated to a shot of Len in a speedo which elicited groans in the press room.

More journalistic groans at Chris Brown’s performance, which looked very “pre-taped” with hordes of attractive young female extras clapping in unison— that didn’t look like an authentic “DWTS” audience to us!

William and Cheryl’s backstage footage showed host Tom Bergeron telling the pro dancer “don’t f— it up” before they hit the floor. Later, Tom told viewers those were his traditional words of encouragement to Cheryl. TMI!

So then, unexpectedly after all that joking, we were told a couple was going to be eliminated right then and there. Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower were kicked off post-haste! Chelsie gave the usual supportive partner schpiel that he was a joy to work with. Although I expected it, the “Shake it Up” star’s exit was too abrupt for me. It was sad as well as as his ‘50s-style romance dance last night was one of my favorites. He just didn’t have enough fans who watched the show, no doubt—that “DWTS” older demo thing cruelly at work.

More Dance Center, more backstage footage, then time for the second couple to leave the ballroom. It was Katherine vs. Melissa. The final result? The two gals both looked somber. Tom declared the second couple leaving the show was…Melissa and Maks!

Well, surprise, surprise, Melissa finally was voted off. Her son was shown looking devsastated in the audience. Brooke announced it was her birthday!

Melissa has had one of the best runs ever on show. She burst into tears, praised Maks. I was about to cry, too! She once had a broken back. Amazing!
