We thought she was dead and gone as part of the “Criminal Minds” Season 6 finale, and then her character rose up and returned to work at the BAU. But this time Paget Brewster, who plays Emily Prentiss, is quitting the series of her own volition.
According to Deadline, the actress has been wanting to make a return to comedy after dealing with the dark subject matter of serial killers on a weekly basis. Last year, Brewster was given permission to join the cast of the NBC pilot “My Life as an Experiment,” and if the pilot had gone to series, she would have been released from her “Criminal Minds” contract. The series did not receive a pickup, so she stayed.
Deadline goes on to say that this year, she was given no such option during pilot season, so when her contract expires in May, she wants out, despite receiving an offer for a new deal.
"After six wonderful years playing Emily Prentiss, I have decided it's time for me to move on," she told Deadline. "As much as I will miss my 'Criminal Minds' family, I am excited about the future and other opportunities."
In the past two years, “Criminal Minds” has gone through some money-saving cast changes that made the fans unhappy. The decision was made in 2010 to write out A.J. Cook’s role as J.J. Jareau and to diminish that of Brewster. JJ did exit the unit for a while, and then Prentiss was allegedly killed off. This past season, the entire cast was back in play, and as of now, it appears that if the show is picked up for the fall, only Brewster will be missing.
