Top Five: Hail the Conquering, ‘Dancing’ Hero

Top Five

This week’s No. 1 on the Top Five was a slam dunk: J.R. Martinez winning “Dancing With the Stars” Tuesday night.

1) ‘Dancing’ with a war hero: Battle-scarred J.R. Martinez triumphed on “Dancing With the Stars” this week, edging out Rob Kardashian (and, previously, the other finalist, Ricki Lake) to win the “DWTS” Mirror Ball Trophy (oops, forgot the adjective “coveted”). It was a close call — a Kardashian victory would not have seemed out-of-place at all since Rob had evolved into quite a competent dancer this season (and, at this point, he might be the only Kardashian we still kinda like). But in the end, J.R. won the day.

2) Shame on you, Jimmy Fallon: Glenn Beck is the one who first came out and said, “Shame on you, Jimmy Fallon” after the world learned how Jimmy welcomed guest Michele Bachmann on to his show Monday night on NBC — with the Roots playing a 1985 song called “Lyin’ Ass Bitch.” Some were quick to excuse Jimmy — who, up until Monday, seemed like the nicest host in late-night — because it seemed like the Roots made this song choice all on their own. But it’s Fallon’s show, and he didn’t act quickly enough to apologize to Bachmann. In fact, the show’s official apology was made by week’s end by an NBC executive, not Jimmy. Shame on you, Jimmy.

3) Dave and Justin: Grouchy David Letterman isn’t always this endearing, but whenever he has Justin Bieber on his show, Letterman turns fatherly. The two have a terrific rapport, which made for a very entertaining guest segment on Letterman’s CBS “Late Show” this week.

4) A “Modern Family” seasonal episode: We’d be remiss if we didn’t include a seasonal show (or maybe two) on this week’s Top Five. Wednesday’s episode of “Modern Family” on ABC is as good an example as any — maybe even better than any. We especially liked the show’s title, “Punkin Chunkin,” an homage to the annual “Punkin Chunkin” pumpkin-hurling competition that airs annually on Thanksgiving on Discovery-owned Science Channel.

5) Give thanks for this: Another ABC Wednesday sitcom, “Suburgatory” went all-out to mark the Thanksgiving holiday with a family dinner complete with pilgrim and Indian costumes.
