Gifting Suite Offers Preview of Daytime Emmy Awards

Angel-Caldwell-300x224
The Daytime Emmy gifting suite is an apt barometer of the state of daytime television. A couple of years ago, actors were gifted with high end items including custom fit sunglasses, designer jeans, and year-long memberships to an expensive gym. In 2011, it’s all about costume jewelry, skin care products, and dog collars. The actors got a kick out of the unusual schwag, with giant light up rings proving to be a big hit. Several stars of “The Young & the Restless” and “The Bold & the Beautiful” shared their predictions for tonight’s ceremony and previewed what’s next for their characters.

Ron Moss (Ridge, “The Bold & the Beautiful”)

Is “Bold and the Beautiful” poised to three-peat as best show tonight?

I think it would be absolutely wonderful and it would make us feel like we're catching up after all these years. I hope that we have a chance to do that.

Sounds like there's a CBS Television City rivalry. Y&R, which tapes next door, used to be the show that always won.

The little sister finally caught up, didn’t it?

The homeless storyline was so powerful to watch. What was it like to film?

It was actually quite lovely because we had people who were from the area where we were filming and they came and joined us on set and became part of the show. Instead of jut hiring actors to portray, we used the people who were really involved. Plus, B&B was able to donate a good amount to the homeless shelter in downtown L.A. It was nice to be able to do a little bit of good.

Is Ridge ever going to forgive Brooke for her alleged hallucinogenic tryst with Thomas?

Look. Brooke is never going to be far from the center of his heart, one way or the other. This is a little snag, one of man. Brooke always manages to get forgiven.

This time, Thomas is the one who needs to be forgiven, since he’s lying about sleeping with Brooke.

I don't know about that. I think he's going downstairs to the basement, so to speak.

Christian LeBlanc (Michael, “The Young & the Restless”)

You are nominated for Leading Actor. Have you written your acceptance speech yet?

That never happens. I kind of know what I want. It gels somewhere along the line. I don't think I have to worry about it. But you never know. I've got some good competition this year.

What are your predictions? Which categories will Y&R win?

I don’t know. I couldn’t even tell you, and I hate to go there. I made the mistake of watching the Tonys and seeing [fellow nominee] Michael Park [Jack, “As the World Turns”] dancing. Then I was at the Technical Emmys [Friday] night, so now I’m just worked up o much, I don’t know which way is up. I’m just excited. It’s wonderful to be here. It’s such a great event. Just being here lights me up because I see friends. How can you not love this? I have a great time at the Emmys even when I’m not nominated.

How do you feel about Vegas stars performing at the ceremony?

I thought the show was so creative last year. I love the Vegas acts. The whole thing that you’re part of a tradition. My mother, before she passed away, met Aretha Franklin. That was at an Emmys. I have really special memories of all the ones I’ve been to and I tell you, win, lose, or draw it’s always been a wonderful time, which amazes me because I’m a very competitive person, I want that Emmy. But I’m amazed that when I come away from it, it’s always a stunning experience. I’m always glad I went. I’m glad I didn’t miss it, and I’m glad I didn’t try and be careful and not get too excited. Just let it go and be as excited as you want to be.

Ron Moss was talking a little trash about how the Emmys have moved down the hall to B&B. What would you say to that?

Ron Moss, God bless him. Sometimes when you live near a nuclear power plant, you just can’t help saying what you say. But let him have it. I’ll give it to him. He’s a pretty man.

Daniel Goddard (Cane, “The Young & the Restless)

What is it about Lily and Cane’s relationship that has inspired fans to be so devoted and passionate?

I think Lane is a love story that worked against the odds. It wasn't meant to be, but the love overcame all the obstacles. I think everyone in their life relates to that.

When did you find out about all the twists in the story. Was it clear in the scripts that Cane was pretending to be Caleb?

I kind of didn't know in the beginning and then I started knowing in the scripts so I could be more definitive with how I play it. I wanted to make sure the audience went on the journey. So there is some sequences where I knew I was really Cane that I had to play more as Caleb so the audience wouldn't figure it out yet.

What is like working with daytime legend Tristan Rogers and Genie Francis?

It’s great. I’m honored to have them [playing] my Mom and Dad. They’re very good actors, very spontaneous actors.

Are they going to be sticking around for the longterm?

I think at this point they're here for the long haul. It will be interesting to see where the story goes and see if we have another family in Genoa City. They're going to mix it up with everybody else.

You are the king of twitter. How do you find the time to tweet so many times a day?

Generally, I tweet the most when I'm on the stationery bike at the gym. I enjoy twitter. I enjoy staying in touch with the fans. I enjoy the feedback they give to me.

How much did your relationship with the fans contribute to Lane's popularity? Is it a chicken and egg situation?

I think it’s like if you survey a couple hundred people, you get a small percentage of what the greater number feels. If you look at Christel [Khalil] and I being the number one actors in Soap Opera Digest every week now for the past two years, the number one couple in Soaps In Depth. I find wherever I go, people say they love Cane and Lily. They relate to the characters. They love it when we’re together. They hate it when we’re apart, and they want us back together.

Marcy Rylan (Abby “The Young & the Restless”)

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Thanks. We’re having number two. I’m feeling good.

So you have to stay sober in Las Vegas this weekend.

I am sober at every single Emmys. Last year I was still breastfeeding. The year before I was pregnant. I am the Daytime Emmys designated driver. If anyone needs a ride, call me.

Was it a challenge finding a maternity Emmy dress?

Yes. I ended up going with a really simple dress this year because I'm not quite big enough for a real maternity gown, but the belly's too big for non-maternity. This is definitely the simplest Emmy dress I've ever worn.

What are your predictions for the awards? Who is going to win?

I have no idea. I have been so much in baby-land. Y&R will be winning best show, of course.

Is your pregnancy going to be written into the show?

No. They're hiding it. CBS does not want my characters to have babies, apparently.

Abby seems to be trying to give up alcohol, so at least you won’t be pretending to drink while you’re pregnant.

It's very funny when I'm hiding the belly and drinking a cocktail. I was pregnant at the AA meeting.

Is anybody ever going to believe Abby when she tells them she was the driver who hit Tucker, not Ashley?

The thing is that we don't really know for sure if Abby did it on purpose. Do I think Abby really pummeled him intentionally? I don't think so. I think she was really drunk and couldn't stop the car. Abby doesn't know. That's the thing.

Angel Caldwell (Leslie “The Young & the Restless)

This is your first daytime Emmys.

It is. I'm really excited. The fact that it's in Vegas, it's fun, and you see everybody from the show. It's good times.

Who do you think is going to win?

Of course I want to see Christian LeBlanc [win]. He’s such a strong, intense actor. Everything he does is just fabulous. I think Michelle Stafford is such a strong actress as well. Of course I’m Y&R all the way. I’m going to support “Young & the Restless” fully. I’m excited to see Pat Sajack because I’m a “Wheel of Fortune” fan.

Leslie seem to be everyone's lawyer. Who is her favorite client?

My first client was Adam. He’s such a controversial, complex character, so it’s really interesting working with Michael Muhney. Angel thinks it’s interesting working with Michael Muhney, and Leslie thinks it’s interesting working with Adam.

Leslie and Neil hooked up for a little while, but we haven't seen much of them lately. Are we going to see them together again?

If they bump into each other… He did say they're going to take it slow. We're taking it pretty slow, clearly. He has a lot of baby daddy drama.

There are a lot of good looking men in Genoa City. Other than Neil, who do you think would be a good guy for Leslie?

There is not a lack of hunk in Genoa City. Everybody’s eye candy. [Nick], Joshua Morrow, may need somebody to hold him down. He seem like he’s a little scattered. I would say Joshua Morrow might need a gal…. Maybe he needs someone who can just say, “Listen, this is what needs to happen.” He needs a little direction.

Leslie was originally a short term role, but the fans and the writers seemed to embrace you from day one.

It was great. I wasn't expecting anything. As an actress, you just do your bet. You give 100 percent. The fact that I wasn't expecting anything made it even more surprising. Of course it touched my heart because I was like, "Wow." It's my family's favorite soap. So to be involved in such a great soap with such a great character, I had to pinch myself a little bit.

Did Leslie buy any Newman stock?

She should. She won a huge case. I'm not sure what she does in the background. There are so many different directions that they could possibly go. I think there's still so much potential and so many unanswered questions. The possibilities are endless. I'm sure she did. She seems like a savvy girl.
