After more than a decade, ‘CSI‘ fans will finally get to meet Gil Grissom’s mother. Tony-award winning actress Phyllis Frelich, who is deaf, has been cast as his mom – a professor at a school for the deaf, according to Entertainment Weekly.
William Petersen (Grissom) won't be appear in the episode, tentatively scheduled for Feb. 3, in which a murder at Mrs. Grissom's school brings her new daughter-in-law Sara (Jorja Fox) to investigate. The two women don't exactly get along, and it has something to do with Marlee Matlin.
The Oscar-winning Matlin, who won for the film version of ‘Children of a Lesser God,’ for which Frelich won her Tony, will also appear as Mrs. Grissom’s protégé and colleague. Matlin’s character is former squeeze of Gil’s and apparently Mama Grissom wishes that were still the case.
The casting of mom follows up the first season episode “Sounds of Silence,” in which viewers learned that Grissom knows sign language because he grew up with a deaf mother.
