When TLC put “Jon & Kate Plus 8” on hiatus in late June, it was widely assumed that the network needed time to renovate a reality production suddenly rendered very different by the divorce of its stars.
But judging by the just-released loglines for the upcoming episodes of “Jon & Kate,” the only thing getting renovated when the show returns to the schedule August 3 is the Gosselin kitchen.
Surprisingly, after the headline-making statements Jon and Kate made about the disintegrating state of their marriage in the the season’s opening episodes, the upcoming loglines released by the network appear to ignore the Gosselin’s pending divorce, Kate’s struggle to what to do now that she’s taken off her wedding ring, and Jon’s dalliances with myriad female companions.
Can the so-called reality series continue if it ignores reality? Does this spell the end of Jon & Kate plus anything? Will they retool and split off into two separate shows? Will viewers still care?
What do you think?
Here’s what TLC released Monday:
Episode # 508 – “Renovations & Vacations” (Premieres August 3 at 9 p.m.)
With eight growing kids, the kitchen has always been a critical room in the Gosselin household. Though the family finally has the kitchen space they've long needed, they need to revamp their cabinets to maximize space and efficiency. The challenge is that Kate didn't realize that renovating the kitchen would result in being without her kitchen for almost two weeks! The thought of doing dishes in the bathtub proves too much for Kate, and she decides to trade stress for relaxation by taking the kids to the beach while Jon manages the cabinet installations. Can Kate escape stress or will the all-too-familiar challenges of parenting eight kids on the road become an obstacle once again?
Episode # 505 – “Camping Out” (premieres August 3 at 9:30 p.m.)
With the warm summer weather and a backyard at their feet, the Gosselin kids are anxious to get outside and spend a night camping out. Sleeping in a tent is not exactly Kate's idea of a relaxing evening, even if it is in her own backyard, but she is determined to make it work so that her kids can have a fun camp out. The kids can't wait to sleep under the stars, but Kate still has to figure out how to do things that she never thought she'd be able to do, like setting up multiple tents and starting a campfire by herself! Will the demands of outdoor camping be too much for Kate, or will a campout with eight kids prove to be surprisingly fun?
Episode # 509 – “Beach & Kitchen Reveal” (premieres August 10 at 9 p.m.)
While Jon oversees the installation of new cabinets in the kitchen, Kate and the kids get into some fun in the sun at the beach. In addition to cooking the kids a special breakfast, Kate recreates summer fun for all the kids, allowing them to body paint with pudding yet again, despite her natural desire for cleanliness and order. Soon enough, it's time to go home, and check out the changes to the kitchen. Will the reveal of the new cabinets and kitchen meet Kate's expectations?
