As WiFi becomes more a part of our everyday lives, figuring out how to fix it when it’s “broken” is crucial. Wondering why your phone isn't connecting to WiFi? Here are some simple troubleshooting steps to take when your phone won’t connect to WiFi that should solve your connectivity issues and get you up and running again in no time.

Enjoy WiFi access on the go with millions of free Xfinity WiFi hotspots nationwide.

  1. Check Your Settings
Make sure you haven’t accidentally turned your WiFi network connection off. Go to your Settings app (or swipe up to access your Control Center on an iPhone or iOS Device) and make sure that WiFi is toggled on and that Airplane Mode is toggled off. Airplane Mode shuts off your WiFi radios, so if it’s on, then you won’t be able to connect.

  3. Shut It Down
A golden rule for troubleshooting technology is “turn it off, then turn it back on,” otherwise known as a “restart.” Most times, this will fix whatever problem you are experiencing. If your phone isn’t connecting to WiFi, shut it down and turn it back on. If that doesn’t do the trick, try a soft reset, which doesn’t affect any data you have on the phone but just reboots the system. If you’re at home and on your home network and having WiFi connectivity issues with all your devices, try restarting your WiFi router, modem, or Gateway.

  4. Forget Your Network
If you’re having trouble connecting to a specific network, go into your WiFi settings and choose “Forget This Network.” Then go back and select the network you want to connect to again (you’ll need to re-enter the network password).

  5. Update Your OS
Occasionally “software bugs” will get into a phone’s operating system, affecting multiple users and prompting the manufacturer to send out an update to fix the issue. Make sure your phone is running on the latest operating system by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update and check to see if you need to update.

  6. Reset Your Settings
Make sure something hasn’t gone awry with your WiFi by resetting your network settings. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This resets all your saved WiFi networks and erases all passwords, so make sure you have your network name and password handy before you do this.

  7. Turn Off Location Services
Location services on your phone use WiFi networks to improve accuracy. It’s possible this could be causing your connectivity issues. Toggle it off to see if it solves your problem. In most cases, these tricks will get you the connection you need. If these solutions don’t help, take your phone to your local service provider for assistance.
